Beyond Aero Unveils Refined Hydrogen-Electric Jet, Targets 2030 Certification
Beyond Aero is doubling down on the future of sustainable aviation with the latest evolution of its hydrogen-electric light jet, the BYA-1. The refined aircraft reflects a series of key engineering updates aimed at improving safety, efficiency, and regulatory readiness—keeping the French aerospace startup on track to deliver the first certified hydrogen-electric jet by 2030.
Power Without the Complexity
At the heart of the BYA-1 is a battery-free, 2.4MW hydrogen fuel cell system. By eliminating high-temperature turbines, Beyond Aero reduces both mechanical complexity and long-term maintenance overhead. Propulsion is handled by electric ducted fans, managed by a bespoke FADEC (Full Authority Digital Engine Control) system that optimizes thrust output across every phase of flight.
For safety, the aircraft now incorporates 700-bar gaseous hydrogen tanks positioned above the wing box—strategically placed to avoid routing high-pressure fuel lines through the cabin, improving crashworthiness and simplifying certification.
A Cost-Saving Shift in Business Aviation
The performance numbers are ambitious: a 65% reduction in fuel costs versus Power-to-Liquid SAFs by 2025, and 17% savings compared to Jet A-1 by the time the aircraft enters service. Thanks to its all-electric drivetrain—featuring 90% fewer moving parts—Beyond Aero anticipates up to 55% lower operational costs, with significant gains in reliability.
Designed for six passengers, the BYA-1 offers an 800 NM range at 310 KTAS, which covers more than 80% of Europe’s flight routes. It’s also runway-friendly: a 620-meter takeoff roll and 5.5° approach angle make it viable for airports with tight constraints, like London City.
Backed by Experts, Fueled by Progress
A high-level advisory committee featuring executives from Airbus, HondaJet, EASA, and Air France has endorsed the project’s technical approach. Beyond Aero is also collaborating directly with EASA to help shape the evolving regulatory framework for hydrogen-powered aircraft—positioning itself not just as a manufacturer, but as a leader in policy-shaping.
With $44 million in funding, €914 million in Letters of Intent, and the milestone of executing France’s first manned hydrogen-electric flight, Beyond Aero isn’t just building a jet—it’s accelerating the future of zero-emission flight.
